Manchester United: 7 flops that must be allowed to leave

7. Ashley Young

The wideman was signed frm Aston Villa a few seasons ago but has yet to make a big impact at Old Trafford and could be moved on at the end of the season. Although it is true that he possesses a fair amount of talent, he could be sold to make way for a move for Borussia Dortmund superstar Marco Reus.

6. Tom Cleverley

The attacking midfielder has failed to show that he has what it takes to perform at the level expected of a Manchester United player. At 25-years-old he is at his peak but is yet to make the breakthrough expected of him a few years ago. He could be sold to make way for a move for Bayern Munich's Toni Kroos.

5. Alexander Buttner

The Dutchman has failed to impress since joining from Vitesse in 2012 and has made just 11 appearances. Signed as an understudy and long-term replacement for ageing left-back Patrice Evra, he has failed to show fans and the manager that he has what it takes to succeed the Frecnhman. He could be sold in the summer to pave way for a move for young Southampton and England starlet Luke Shaw.

4. Guillermo Varela

The Uruguayan was signed for £2.3 million last summer and has yet to make an appearance for the Red Devils. He signed with little to no experience having just made one appearance at former club Penarol - a 1-0 defeat. He doesn't have the quality to fill the void left by Gary Neville a few years ago and should be let go to make way for Southampton right-back Calum Chambers.

3. Rafael

Similar to Varela, the young Brazilian right-back has not shown he has got what it takes to fill Neville's role. He has a poor disciplinary record and could be shown the exit door to make way for a more reliable alternative in the summer.

2. Nani

The Portuguese winger has failed to impress this season and has been extremely inconsistent. Although he undoubtedly possesses a great amount of talent, he has been unable to show it at Old Trafford and should be allowed to leave to showcase his talents elsewhere.

1. Anderson

The Brazilian is possibly one of the worst signings that Sir Alex Feruson ever made. He does not possess the quality that is required of a player at Manchester United and should be shifted along to a different club once his loan finishes at the end of the summer.

The 40-year-old has called time on his footballing career after a club-record 963 matches, and will now focus exclusively on his duties as assistant to new boss Louis van Gaal

Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs has pulled down the curtain on a 23-year playing career by announcing his retirement as he becomes new manager's Louis van Gaal's assistant.

Giggs played a club record 963 matches for United since making his debut in March 1991, scoring 168 goals. Prior to the 2013-14 campaign he had scored in every Premier League season since its inception in 1992.

He ended the most recent campaign as the club's caretaker manager following the sacking of David Moyes, and bid farewell to Old Trafford against Hull City after substituting himself on for the final 20 minutes.

"I am immensely proud, honoured and fortunate to have represented the biggest club in the world 963 times and Wales 64 times," Giggs told the club's official website - a statement which can be read in full HERE.

"My dream was always to play for Manchester United, and although it saddens me to know I won’t be pulling on a United jersey again as a player, I have been lucky enough to have fulfilled that dream."

He added: "For me, today is a new chapter filled with many emotions - immense pride, sadness, but most of all, excitement towards the future.

"To the greatest fans in world football, thank you, I have loved every minute of playing for you and representing the biggest and best club in the world."

The 40-year-old was an integral part of United's finest years under Sir Alex Ferguson, from the first Premier League title in 1993 to the most recent in 2013, via the 1999 treble and Champions League triumph in 2008.

His solo goal in the 1999 FA Cup semi-final replay against Arsenal will go down as arguably the most iconic in the competition's history, and in 2008 he wrapped up the Premier League title by scoring the second goal against Wigan after coming off the bench to equal Sir Bobby Charlton's club appearance record.

He broke the record 10 days later against Chelsea in Moscow, and scored what proved to be the decisive penalty in the shoot-out before Edwin van der Sar saved from Nicholas Anelka.

Giggs retires as the most decorated player in English football history, following a career littered with club and individual trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, four FA Cups, four Capital One Cups and two Champions Leagues.

He won the PFA Young Player of the Year on two occasions, in 1992 and 1993, as well as Manchester United's version of the prize in 1991 and 1992.

In 2009 he was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year and also won the senior PFA Player of the Year award. On six occasions he has been named in the PFA Team of the Year.

The Welshman, who represented his country 64 times, was awarded a testimonial in 2001 to commemorate 10 years of service at Old Trafford.

Giggs made his final United appearance last Tuesday when he replaced 20-year-old Tom Lawrence in the 70th minute. The stand-in boss had handed the 20-year-old Lawrence his full United debut alongside highly-rated 18-year-old striker James Wilson, who scored twice against the Tigers.

The Dutchman will begin a three-year contract at Old Trafford after Netherlands' participation at World Cup 2014 is complete, with Ryan Giggs appointed as his assistant

Louis van Gaal has been confirmed as the new manager of Manchester United, with Ryan Giggs named his assistant.

The Dutchman will begin a three-year contract at Old Trafford after the conclusion of his work in charge of Netherlands at the World Cup.

Frans Hoek and Marcel Bout, countrymen of Van Gaal, also arrive at Old Trafford as coaches, with the former specialising in goalkeeping and the latter in scouting the opposition.

Louis Van Gaal Hands Manchester United Eight-Man Shortlist

On that list is believed to contain the names of William Carvalho, Thomas Muller, Marco Reus, Luke Shaw, Toni Kroos, Kevin Strootman, Mats Hummels and Edinson Cavani, with United said to be armed with a massive £150m transfer war chest this summer by the Glazer family in order to pursue those big-money players.
